Plastic Waste Containers Returned

(PHNOM PENH) – The General Department of Customs and Excise announced that 83 containers of plastic waste have been returned by ship. The plastic was illegally imported to Cambodia by CHUNG YUEN PLASTIC MANUFACTURE Co., Ltd.

On July 16, 2019, Cambodian authorities announced the discovery of 83 containers containing plastic waste at the port in Sihanoukville. The waste has been banned from importing into Cambodia and has been smuggled from China by Chun Yuen Plastic Manufacture Co., LTD between 2018 and early 2019.

At the press conference on July 30, 2019, Mr. Kun Nim, Director General of the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia, announced the containers weighing 1592 tons, should be returned to the countries of origin and the company pay a fine before August 24, 2019. .

70 containers were from the United States and 13 from Canada. Prior to its arrival in Cambodia, 83 containers of plastic were shipped through Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

On August 23, 2019, the General Department of Customs and Excise announced that the firm had paid a fine of over $259,000 to the national budget, but asked for an extension to remove the remaining 69 container until October 25, 2019.

However, in a press release dated 16th September, 2019, the General Department of Customs and Excise stated that on September 15, 2019 the rest of the containers had been removed by ship.
