CANNES, FRANCE—Cambodian production company Anti-Archive is excited and honored to announce that ONODA – 10000 NIGHTS IN THE JUNGLE, the second narrative feature film from French director Arthur Harari, will open Un Certain Regard, an official section of the 74th Cannes Festival, the largest and most prestigious film festival in the world.

The film tells the true story of a Japanese soldier, Hiroo Onoda, 22 years old. Trained for intelligence work, Onoda discovers a philosophy contrary to the official line : no suicide, stay alive whatever happens, the mission is more important than anything else. Sent to Lubang, a small island in the Philippines where the Americans are about to land, his role will be to wage a guerilla war until the return of the Japanese troops. The Empire will surrender soon after, Onoda 10000 days later.

In its announcement of the selection last week, the Cannes Festival praised the film:

ONODA – 10 000 NIGHTS IN THE JUNGLE was produced by Nicholas Anthomé of bathysphere productions and To Be Continued Production, in co-production with Ascent Film, Chipangu, Frakas Productions, Pandora Film Produktion, Anti-Archive (Cambodia), Arte France Cinéma, RAI Cinema, and Proximus.
Anti-Archive joined in co-production and line production with an amazing team of more than 60 Cambodian crew, managing the film’s locations, unit, and production, and working closely under the heads of all other departments.

The film was shot in Cambodia, in Kampot, Kep, and Preah Sihanouk Provinces. The film was made possible only with the critical support of the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense, the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, the Cambodian Ministry of Environment, the Cambodian Cinema Department, the Cambodia Film Commission, PSE School of Media and the Japanese community in Cambodia.

Following the film’s world premiere at Cannes, it will be distributed in France by Le Pacte, which will handle international sales, with a French release set for 21 July 2021. The premiere in Cambodian cinemas should happen by the end of this year.

Shotgun Wedding is a Hollywood movie that tells the story of a couple getting married and being captured by a band of thieves. In the process of rescuing the family, they rediscovered the real cause. The film is directed by Jason Moore and written by Mark Hamme. 

Sam Tharoth is the daughter of the poet Oum Dara and was one of the first Cambodian women to re-practice bokator after the martial art almost disappeared during the Khmer Rouge era. She also starred in the documentary: “Surviving Bokator” and acted in a number of films in Cambodia, including “Jail Break” and “First They Kill My Father” by Angelina Jolie. She is the pride of Cambodia.

The actress revealed that the film started production a few days ago. She confirmed that last Friday, she had just started shooting one of the big scenes and that she was really excited. What made her even more excited was that she was praised by the film crew. She said that the first scene was a fight that she did not have much difficulty, although bruised in some places, which is normal, and she was happy that the producers and the team praised her performance. She considers this to be a special platform to showcase Khmer art and Khmer martial arts.

The documentary, titled “Cirque du Cambodia,” is about two teenagers from Cambodia who learned how to become circus performers at a special school for the arts near their home village. They became determined to become the first Cambodians to take the stage with Cirque du Soleil after seeing one of their videos. The two of them moved across the world to Montreal, where Cirque du Soleil is headquartered, in order to attend the world’s most elite circus school after getting full scholarships there. The film follows them on their journey as they try to reach the top of the circus world.

Gershon started work on this film in 2011.

“I filmed the two Cambodian main characters for more than six years as they continued to try to fulfill their dreams, shooting in four countries. The film features three spoken languages,” Gershon said.

The film will have its first screening as part of the United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF) on Oct. 21, and it will be broadcast for free for California residents.

MagicQuest Entertainment, a Hollywood production company since 1975, is seeking a young male Kun Khmer fighter to star in its action-packed motion picture.

Hollywood actor and Oscar Academy member Bo Svenson has developed the award winning screenplay “Charya – A Champion For All” and is now looking to film it in Cambodia.

Swedish-American Svenson has been in contact with the Battambang based Kun Khmer firm The Riel Team (TRT), which handles Kun Khmer athletes like Keo Rumchong.

TRT will act as consultants and help Svenson and his Hollywood team to move forward with this exciting project.

“This is another major opportunity for Kun Khmer to reach beyond Cambodia’s borders and share Khmer culture with the world,” said Matias Andres, co-founder of The Riel Team. “Svenson is an prominent actor that has worked with some of Hollywood’s most prestigious names like Quentin Tarantino and Clint Eastwood.

“It is an honor to have him shoot his movie in Cambodia, and a even bigger privilege for him to turn his award winning screenplay to a movie about the nation’s pride: Kun Khmer”

LOOKING FOR A KUN KHMER ACTION MOVIE HERO

Svenson says that the movie will “star a heroic Cambodian who brings honor and respect to the Cambodian people,” and that the movie is slated to film for several days in Cambodia and then move to Southern California for the remainder of the shoot.

“Filming the picture in Southern California gives us access to film crews experienced in this genre” says Svenson, “including the crew from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and my own crew from when I directed Dennis Hopper in Made For Each Other and David Carradine in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues for Warner Bros.”

Svenson is currently in negotiation with major brands in Cambodia that are interested in supporting this project and making sure that “The Kingdom of Wonder” gets its first major Hollywood release about Kun Khmer.

Parallel with negotiations, Svenson and TRT are beginning to scout for a young Cambodian Kun Khmer Action Movie Hero, that will star as the movie’s leading character.

Svenson expects many applications and envisions an exciting way to make sure they find the right candidate:

“If circumstances permit, the two finalists for the main role will compete in a televised fight in Phnom Penh or Las Vegas, with the winner getting to star in the movie — a world first — and the runner up getting the co-starring role as the character Hanzu,” Svenson explains.

Svenson and TRT now argues applicants and companies to get in touch for cooperation opportunities and more information on the world’s first major Kun Khmer movie.

XYZ Films represents North American rights to the film, which capitalises on the popularity of Jailbreak, the first Cambodian film acquired by Netflix that was directed by Jimmy Henderson from a screenplay by Michael Hodgson.

Henderson returns as director on The Prey and reunites with Hodgson and co-writer Kai Miller on the story of Xin (Gu Shang Wei), an undercover Chinese cop who gets arrested during a raid on a gang he infiltrated.

When he is slung in a remote jungle prison, Xin is targeted by a corrupt warden who invites wealthy businessmen to hunt his criminal charges. Gu Sheng Wei and Vithaya Pansringarm star.
