Loy Krathong 2024 is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for a festival in Thailand that combines candlelit serenity with, well, tossing things into a river, then you’re in for a treat. Celebrated on November 15 and 16, 2024, this enchanting Thai festival is all about floating little decorated baskets (krathongs) on waterways to honour the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha, and apologise for, you know, all the pollution and whatnot. It’s also a moment to let go of bad vibes, grudges or even that New Year’s resolution you totally bailed on by February.

The History Behind the Glow

Loy Krathong has been floating around for centuries. It’s believed to have originated in the Sukhothai Kingdom as a Brahmin festival to pay respects to the Hindu gods, but it gradually morphed into a Buddhist tradition. The floating krathong is now a symbol of gratitude to the rivers and a metaphorical way to let go of negativity. Plus, it’s a perfect excuse to have a massive party by the water.

Typically, krathongs are made from banana tree trunks or bread, which not only float nicely but are also eco-friendly and fish-friendly, unlike some of the more modern, glittery foam monstrosities that have caused some environmental challenges in recent years. So, when you’re crafting your krathong, go green.

What to Expect

First of all, you’re going to be awestruck by the sheer number of twinkling lights floating on rivers, lakes and ponds across the country. Whether you’re in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or even a small village, you’ll see the rivers filled with these glowing offerings. The vibe is serene, magical and Instagram-worthy.

But the celebration isn’t just about making the rivers pretty. In Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong coincides with Yi Peng, where thousands of lanterns are released into the sky. Picture this: candles on the water and lanterns floating upwards like gravity-defying fireflies. It’s truly a photographer’s dream.

Bangkok, being Bangkok, amps it up with fireworks, riverside parties and huge public celebrations along the Chao Phraya River. You can even hop on a boat cruise to float alongside the krathongs. Just imagine the photo ops (and the Instagram likes). And if you’re in Sukhothai, the festival is an extra-special affair because it’s essentially a homecoming as this is where it all started. Expect historical park settings and a more traditional take on the festivities.

Want to Join the Fun?

To participate, you can buy a pre-made krathong from one of the many vendors, or if you’re feeling crafty, make your own with banana leaves, flowers, incense and a candle. Light it up, make a wish and gently place it on the water. Legend says that if your krathong stays afloat, your wish will come true.

Pro Tips

  • Best Spots: Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Bangkok are the big three for Loy Krathong. But even smaller towns and islands, such as Ayutthaya and Phuket, put on a show.
  • Foodie Heaven: As with any Thai festival, expect food stalls galore. It’s basically a license to eat your weight in street food while you watch your krathong float away.
  • Don’t be that tourist: Do your bit for the environment and avoid buying krathongs with foam or plastic.

Loy Krathong 2024 is your chance to experience the beauty of Thailand’s waterways in full glow-up mode. So grab a krathong, let go of your worries and float into the night.
