Kampot Body At Pagoda: Case Solved

Kampot Province: The body of a man found by monks on the morning of February 14 at Wat Kiri Bopha Rompeun in Sdech Kong Khang Lech commune, Banteay Meas district. It was first believed to have been a murder case because the victim had a hammock tied to him.

However, the Banteay Meas district police and Kampot provincial police investigated the case.

Lieutenant Colonel Chhim Chheang, director of the Kampot Provincial Serious Crimes Bureau, told reporters this morning that the man was named Phe Samnang, 32, and his wife Nak Ron, 31, and their two children live in Chang village, Khum commune. Phnom Totong, Dang Tong District, Kampot Province.

The lieutenant colonel said that the couple had a family dispute in July 2020 and that they split up, but have not yet officially divorced. Later, Phe Samnang went to live in Lok village, Russey commune, Khang Lech district, Kampong Trach district, Kampot province.

The lieutenant colonel said that just before the victim died, he called his wife to come to live with him again, but she refused. Later, on the night of February 13, 2021, the victim washed his car with a man called Ra and drank. The victim went to take a shower, but he did not return to drink alcohol. Others looked around and saw the victim had tied a hammock to his neck and hanged himself.

The source added that as many as 10 drunk men panicked, and some took a knife to cut the man down. The victim was later taken to a private hospital in Boeung Chhouk, east of Kampong Trach district hall, but doctors said he was already dead.

The men carrying the body became more and more frightened and took it to Ang Sophy pagoda in Ang Sophy commune, Kampong Trach district, but the monks in Ang Sophy pagoda did not allow them to place the body in the pagoda. Later, the body was transported to Wat Kiri Bopha Rompeun in Sdech Kong Khang Lech commune, Banteay Meas district because it is close to the victim’s wife’s house. Someone made a phone call to inform the parents of the man in Trapeang Treng village, Khvav commune, Samrong district, Takeo province.

The lieutenant colonel confirmed that, according to the latest findings, the victim was upset with his wife’s refusal and committed suicide. KOHSANTEPHEAP
