Protesters ‘Monk Must Go’

PHNOM PENH: On December 1, nearly 2,000 people gathered in front of a pagoda in Por Sen Chey district in a mass demonstration demanding the removal of Venerable Seng Thang, the head of the Korkan Pagoda.

People are protesting for Seng Thang to be removed, and demanding the closure of the pagoda until a new head monk is appointed.

The cause of the protest was said that the abbot has sold pagoda land, especially a common road, after which traders were stopped by a fence, meaning they were unable to travel through the area.

However, Venerable Seng Thang, the head of the Kokang monastery, has denied any such charges. NKD
