Inside Phnom Penh’s New Prison

Phnom Penh: On November 15, 2019, the General Department of Prisons showed the new Prey Sar prison, located in Kamrieng Village, Sangkat Prey Veng, Khan Dangkor, Phnom Penh, which was built by the Ministry of Interior.

After the handover to the General Department of Prisons, the new prison will be used to ease overcrowding by transferring detainees to existing prisons. The number of inmates in prisons across the country is now over 36,600, including more than 3,000 women, many of whom are drug offenses. Interesting, actually 0.2% of the population. This out of date stats shows 176/10,000 people in jail, (140 for UK, 655 for USA!) but the number of prisoners has increased following the drugs crackdown of the past year or so. But the population rate is also increasing by around 240k a year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate
