Human Trafficking Case Halted At Bus Stop
Phnom Penh: Two men and a woman were arrested over a case of selling women from Cambodia through Vietnam and on to China.
The arrests were made on November 5, 2019 at a bus stop on St 144, Corner of Street 49, Sangkat Phsar Thmei 3, Daun Penh District, Phnom Penh.
Two males aged 21 years old and a 27-year-old woman, all Cambodian, were detained in connection with smuggling women to be brides in China. It is not clear what their exact roles were, but the woman is thought to have been the main target of the operation.
Prior to the suspects’ arrests, the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Bureau conducted an investigation of the suspected woman.
A broker contacted the victims, offering $ 2,000 to $ 3,000 per person to go and work in China. The broker promised to arrange passports and take them to the Bavet International Checkpoint, from where the would head to Ho Chi Minh City, and meet another broker to cross the border to China.
The three suspects were arrested by police of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Bureau and placed in pretrial detention. The two women were handed over to police by the Phnom Penh Social Affairs Department. AREY NEWS
