Khmer Rouge Leader Nuon Chea Dies Aged 93

Phnom Penh: Neth Pheaktra, head of the Khmer Rouge tribunal’s Public Affairs Section, told the media on the evening of August 4, 2019, that the 93-year-old Nuon Chea, has died.

Neth Pheaktra stated that Nuon Chea had died at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, where he had been transferred from the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for medical treatment since July 2, 2019.

In 2014, Nuon Chea, AKA Brother Number Two, received a life sentence for crimes against humanity, alongside another top-tier Khmer Rouge leader, Khieu Samphan, and a further trial convicted him of the crime of genocide in 2018.
