Takeo’s Sacred Tamarind Tree

Takeo Province: There are many old tamarind trees in Phnom Penh, especially around old Chaktomuk, along the road near the Royal Palace. These are thought to be hundreds of years old.

However, these are still smaller than one of the original tamarinds, found in the village of Khrang Thom, Takeo province.

Some adults in the area who are aged over 70 have said that since they were born, this tree was always a giant. So, according to their estimates, it is easily between 300 to 500 years old. It is not only ancient and large, but has become a holy sanctuary and a special place of worship for the villagers.
