Mondulkiri Elephant Killed for Ivory
Local media report that HE Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, told BTVlocal news earlier that an elephant found dead in a cashew plantation in Mondulkiri province’s Keo Seima district was shot for ivory and the tail.
He added that according to the examination, a hole in the nose near the the eyes was found, and the ivory tusks and the tail were cut off. Authorities and officials are searching for the shooters.
UPDATE: The bullet that killed the elephant has now been removed. There is disagreement over whether the motive was for ivory or angry farmers.
