“My Mother Sold Me” Producer in Court

Phnom Penh: On the afternoon of December 13, 2018, the Ministry of Interior sent the head of a construction worker union to the Municipal Court in Phnom Penh to inquire into the video “My Mother Sold Me”.

Ly Sakhana, spokesman for the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said that  the suspect in the case, Rath Rott Mony, was being questioned by Deputy Prosecutor Khieu Phalla.

Last week, Long Kim Heang, wife of Rath Rott Mony, told reporters that her husband, who helped produce the film for Russian news agency RT, was arrested by Thai authorities and sent to the Government of Cambodia upon request.

Long Kim Heang claims that the arrest of her husband involved the production of a video documentary titled “My Mother Sold Me” by Russian Press (RT).

The film looks at Cambodian women selling their own daughters due to poverty and describing the situation of sexual exploitation.

In Cambodia, the government is angry because it distorts the prestige and dignity of Cambodian women. Cambodian authorities have stated that the video is a fabrication that would hurt Cambodian honor.
