Taxi Driver Robs Japanese Customer

Phnom Penh: A taxi driver robbed his foreign passenger for more than $ 10,000 and tried to escape. Six days later, police force arrested and detained him. Almost $ 10,000 was returned to the victim.

The crime occurred at 2:30 on September 1, 2018 in Boeung Keng Kang II. After six days of searching, police finally detained their man on September 6, 2018.

The suspect, named Bun Mao, is a taxi driver for Pass Ap. The victim, identified as Soko Ciganti, a 43-year-old Japanese, resides in  Boeung Keng Kang II. The victim filed a complaint and the cops kept an eye out for the wayward Hackney carriage.

The victim reported that before the incident at 6 pm on August 31, 2018, he riding a tuk-tuk with his friends to eat on Street 63, Tonle Bassac, Chamkarmon. At 2:00 am,  on September 1, 2018, after drinking, he called Pass Ap taxi to take him home.

The victim said that when he got home, he withdrew $5 to pay the taxi, when suddenly the taxi driver, the suspect, seeing a  large wad of cash, grabbed the victim’s wallet (or bag) and drove off at speed.

After being caught driving in the same area, the suspect was relieved of his Camry and $9800, which was returned to the Japanese man.

For his actions, the taxi driver is being driven to court, off the meter.
